2016 Annual Report & Financial Statement [PDF]

2016 was a challenging year for the Board of Friends of FUNDAL, following the recent and sudden death of Board Chair Dr. Wynn Cherry. However, the board added new members, awarded a major grant, funded and coordinated specialized training for two FUNDAL staff, and started a scholarship fund in memory of Wynn.

Grants

MDG Grant

During 2016, FOF worked with FUNDAL on a grant related to high-impact education, funded by $4,100 from the Millennium Development Goal grant committee of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, through St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Raleigh. FOF was awarded this grant by the MDG Committee in its final grant cycle, after FOF make a grant request spearheaded by now-deceased Chair Wynn Cherry. FOF worked with FUNDAL on clarification of very specific deliverables.

This grant funded half a teacher position in FUNDAL's Outreach/Distance Education Program. The teacher provided staff training at non-FUNDAL primary schools and group homes that are too far from FUNDAL campuses for the students to attend FUNDAL. By providing consultation and technical assistance to teachers and other staff in the primary school and group homes, the program, FUNDAL helped those institutions increase competence of their staffs to provide ongoing educational services to students with multiple impairments.

Grant for O&M Training in New York

FOF provided Orientation and Mobility training in New York City on April 18th to 21st to two FUNDAL direct staff, physical therapists Adriana Hurtado Delgado and Yadira Gutierrez Andrada. FOF board member Dr. Eugene Bourquin planned, coordinated and led the training, with board member Grace Bullen assisting. Both Gene and Grace are Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists.

Training partners included the Helen Keller National Center (HKNC, the NYC public school department of exceptional children, and an adult DeafBlind O&M student in the community. A special bonus was visiting Adaptive Designs Association, which had provided training to FUNDAL staff within the last few years. The ADA director provided an update on new designs being used for children needing special supportive equipment in the classroom.

Memorial for Wynn Cherry

Following FOF Chair Wynn Cherry's death in December of 2015, FOF received several donations in her memory from family, friends, and colleagues of Wynn. By the start of 2016, over $800 had been received in memorial gifts.

The FOF Board discussed different options for a memorial for Wynn. In consultation with Wynn's family, and because of Wynn's love of and commitment to teaching, the Board decided the most fitting memorial would be a scholarship fund to provide grants for continuing education for teachers and other staff working directly with students. The Dr. Wynn Cherry Memorial Teacher Scholarship Fund The grant fund was established. Further designated funds for it were raised at FOF's first "Guatemalan Children's Day" event, held October 1st. The event included a brief presentation about FOF, FUNDAL and Wynn, and a slide show of FUNDAL students and the school, display of items from Guatemala.

Fundraising Activities

FOF participated in both the spring and fall Belk Charity Day Sale events, which raised hundreds of dollars for FOF with no financial outlay from FOF, only time to sell tickets and volunteer at the Charity Day events.

FOF was one of the designated nonprofits in the annual St. Mark's Episcopal Church (Raleigh) Alternative Gift Giving effort.

FOF sold FUNDAL calendars.

The Guatemalan Children's Day Event, held at Fullsteam Brewery in Durham raised funds for the aforementioned Wynn Cherry Teacher Fund through donations in Wynn's memory, a raffle, and a silent auction. The $2,580 raised at this event, plus another $1,470 in gifts given earlier in the year in memory of Wynn Cherry, provided initial funding for the Wynn Cherry Teacher Scholarship Fund (total $4,050). Wynn provided creativity, passion and leadership as Friends of FUNDAL's Chair of the Board when she died unexpectedly on December 22, 2015.
